The International Boxing Association (IBA) will launch the Global Boxing House metaverse in the fourth quarter of this year, which it says will “open a new era in boxing.”
The platform will include a virtual reality (VR) box, VR training, non-fungible tokens, “fan tokens”, a VR fighting arena, and its own cryptocurrency.
The latter will be used as the payment method for all software, including sports betting and subscriptions to online matches and boxing tournaments.
“Given the fact that boxing is considered the sixth most important sport with an audience equivalent to 540 million people, this sport is of particular interest to the sports community as a whole,” the IBA said in a statement.
“There is no example in the world that an official sports association is the developer of its own metaworld.
“David Suleimanov, an IT professional with an excellent track record in project development, marketing and growth, was brought in to develop such a large IT platform.”
The platform is said to include the latest technology for live streaming of matches and tournaments, ticketing and betting.
It is hoped that the VR training system will create an industry of boxing trainers to train thousands of young athletes at the same time, rather than a few, and “transform and digitize the training process.”
The move comes as the IBA is looking to reach a younger audience and a digital presence is seen as the way forward.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is fighting to keep boxing in the Olympics after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed serious concerns about management.
The IOC has warned that boxing is not included in the original program of the 2028 Games in Los Angeles and may also be excluded from the program of the 2024 Games in Paris.
The body that suspended the IBA in 2019 now oversees boxing in the French capital, which also organizes competition at the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021.
